Description
Right out of a New England estate. This 2 sided Crab buckle is very rare to say the least! We are not aware of another example of this Kerr crab "buckle" available anywhere and could not find any record of one having ever been offered before! The only example we could find is a "brooch" in this 2" size on Ruby Lane currently for 0 and the factory design # is 1356.
This buckle numbered 1233 is from the transitional Victorian - Art Nouveau period, circa aprox. 1900. This double crab belt buckle with patent leather belt is absolutely spectacular, the design is high relief, boldly embossed with great detailed hollow repousse Construction. Both pieces are in excellent condition with all of their original tight detail. Edges are well defined, perfect patina, with no loss or wear whatsoever from polishing. Each crab is 2" x 1.75", belt total length (end to end including belt buckles) is 35" x 1 1/8" wide. Markings on belt clasps "PATENT APPL'D FOR" hallmarked on one crab is the Kerr ax with the 3 x's and "STERLING 1233".
