Stenograph Reporter Shorthand Machine - my Mother had the idea to become a court recorder when I was a kid. She bought this machine and never enrolled in the correspondence course to learn how to use it. I believe the fan-fold paper in was in it when she bought it. The case has a few blemishes where the original foam tape cushioning it turned to 'goo'.  It is otherwise in nice condition.
The Stenograph/Stenotype machine, known as a shorthand machine or steno writer is a specialized chorded keyboard typewriter used by stenographers for shorthand use. The stenotype keyboard has far fewer keys than a conventional alphanumeric keyboard. Multiple keys are pressed simultaneously (known as "chording" or "stroking") to spell out whole syllables, words, and phrases with a single hand motion.
