Reading (PA) Eagle, Tues. Dec. 18, 1984, p. 38. Retired Brewmaster succumbs at age 73. Alex S. Bombinski, retired brewmaster of the former Sunshine Brewing Co., died Monday afternoon at 5:43 in Reading Hospital, where had been a patient since Nov. 15. Bombinski, 73, of 302 Reading Ave., West Reading, had been the brewmaster from 1950 until retiring in 1972. He was the husband of Charlotte E. Venne Bombinski. In an interview in the Reading Times on Oct. 12, 1981, Bombinski said much of the beer he had tried in recent years had not stood up to Sunshine beer. He added, "The beer is getting lighter today and has less flavor. You don't know if you're drinking beer or a soft drink." Bombinski said the demise of the Sunshine Brewing Co. was avoidable. He stated, "The only reason the brewery failed was mismanagement. This town used to have seven breweries, now there is none." After graduating from Marquette University, Milwaukee, Wis., he enrolled in the Wall-Henius Institute, a brewers academy in Chicago. His first job after graduation was in the fermenting department of the Blatz brewery in Milwaukee. His first job as a brewmaster was with the Bechaud Brewing Co., Fond du Lac, Wis. After two years, he went to work for the Pabst Brewing Co. in Milwaukee and then came to the Sunshine Brewery. Born in Berlin, Wis., he was a son of the late Joseph and Ann Bombinski. He was a member of Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church, West Reading.
