Quilmes is an Argentine brewery, founded in Quilmes (Buenos Aires) in 1888 by Otto Bemberg, a German immigrant who was born in Köln/Cologne in 1827 and died in Paris/France in 1896 at the age op 69. The company quickly started growing and in the 1920's it was already the most popular beer in Buenos Aires. Since then, it has become something of a national symbol, and has 75% of the beer market share in Argentina. It sponsors the Argentina national football team, and the colours of its labels are Argentina's light blue and white.
The French artist Jean D'Ylen, initially born as Jean Paul Beguin, changed his name in 1912 because it would have a more international sounding flair. He was originally a jewelry designer, but decided to follow his passion after the Great War by becoming a poster illustrator for the advertising firm Vercasson in Paris. He was with them for many years, leading in his field, until a disagreement prompted him to sign with Weimer advertising in 1938, who were based in London. Sadly, he died only a few years later, still at the peak of his career.
He made the initial poster design for Quilmes Bock at the Vercasson-studio in Paris around 1925. Furthermore he is known for his famous creations for brands like Shell, Ripolin, Chocolat Pupier, Chaudfontaine, Sandeman, Spa Monopole, Zenith, etc.
