1901 Pan American Exposition Souvenir, Buffalo, NYMETAL-FRAMED, LIGHTED PICTURE (not a photograph)
These were
extremely rare,
as the market for electrical items in 1901 was extremely limited. This souvenir picture would have been originally wired with an 1893 General Electric 2-pin plug, with which only the newest, most modern, and wealthiest homes and establishments were equipped at the time. It comes from the estate of a long-time collector, a descendent of a blue-blood Buffalo family.
The image appears to be a standard postcard rendering of the exposition landscape. It is more or less reverse "decoupaged" to a piece of mounting glass.
The frame measures 14.5" H x 12" W x 3" D, and has been "wired" to accommodate a standard 110 plug. It is in as-found condition, and needs either complete re-wire or at least wire nuts for continued safe use. It has the two original tube bulbs (120 years old!), still in working condition. Heat from the incandescent bulbs has made the mounted image bubble a little bit, but the image is relatively clear and even the small-print copyright and patent info is legible in the lower corners of the obverse.
I plugged it in carefully to show that the lights do indeed work, but I do not recommend doing so again. If I were keeping this piece, a couple of wire nuts would suit. But I'll let you handle it however you wish.
While not "museum quality," I think this is probably as good condition as you are likely to find.
This souvenir was made by "Formed Products" of Elmhurst, Long Island, NY. The makers mark sticker remains on the metal, reverse side. The back has two holes in the top corners for mounting the fame to your wall.
As always, the photos are the most essential part of the description. Please observe them carefully. Ask any questions prior to bidding.
