I'm currently listing a large number of playbills from out-of-town tryouts prior to the Broadway runs. Many are from early performances when revisions were common and include song titles that were cut before opening in New York. (See cut songs below.) ....... This is a rare October 1977 "Performing Arts" program from the Pre-Broadway engagement of the GEORGE FURTH, JOHN KANDER and FRED EBB musical "THE ACT" at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion in Los Angeles, California. (The show would open October 29th, 1977 at the Majestic Theatre in New York City and run for 233 performances.) ..... The musical starred LIZA MINNELLI and the cast included BARRY NELSON, ARNOLD SOBOLOFF, GAYLE CROFOOT, ROGER MINAMI, CHRISTOPHER BARRETT, MARK GODDARD, CLAUDIA ASBURY, WAYNE CILENTO, CAROL ESTEY, MICHAEL LEEDS, LAURIE DAWN SKINNER, BRAD WITSGER and ALBERT STEPHENSON ..... CREDITS: Book by GEORGE FURTH ("Company", "Merrily We Roll Along", "The Act"); Music by JOHN KANDER and Lyrics by FRED EBB (the songwriting team responsible for "Flora the Red Menace", "Cabaret", "70, Girls, 70", "Chicago", "The Rink", "The Happy Time", "The Act", "Woman of the Year", "Zorba", "Curtains" and "The Scottsboro Boys" among others); Sets designed by TONY WALTON; Costumes designed by HALSTON; Choreographed by RON LEWIS; Directed by MARTIN SCORSESE; Produced by FEUER and MARTIN ..... DETAILS: The oversized 68 page playbill measures 8 3/8" X 10 7/8" inches and includes full production credits, cast list, synopsis of scenes, list of musical numbers and individual photos and bios of each of the cast members ..... CUT SONGS: The list of musical numbers includes "Please, Sir" and "Walking Papers" which were cut out-of-town and "Hollywood, California which was cut shortly after arriving in New York ..... CONDITION: With the exception of minor surface rubbing to the cover and a light vertical crease, this program is in excellent condition and will make a wonderful addition to the collection of any musical theatre aficionado or historian.
