Description

1930s Edelbrew Lighted Glass Back Bar Sign for Parts or Restoration
This sign was produced by Price Brothers of Chicago, IL in the mid to late 1930s for Edelbrew Brewery Inc. of Brooklyn, NY.  It was model #777 among Price Brothers’ “Halo” line of advertising signs.  The design is characteristic of the Art Deco Streamline Moderne style that emerged in the 1930s.  The utility patent #2118777 was filed

The primary ad panel was reverse-painted glass.  I bought this years ago to have on hand for parts.  About 50% of the paint on the ad panel remained and was substantially deteriorated.  I removed it when I cleaned the sign and replaced some of the missing/broken parts.  There’s a small chip in the lower corner of the glass and a some minor scratches here and there.
The lower ad panel is reverse-painted glass and retains 99% of its paint with very minor loss at each end and one light horizontal scratch at the left end.  The paint is tight to the glass with no fading, crazing, lifting or peeling.
The cast metal base serves as support for the ad panels and clamshell reflector and enclosure for the lamps.  The finish on the base has wear and corrosion.  The bottom access panel and four rubber feet are missing.
The painted sheet metal clamshell back has no dents.  There’s wear and scratches to the paint inside and out.
The internal wiring and one socket are original and in good working order.  I wrapped electrical tape over the missing portion of the socket sleeve for protection. The second socket is a new replacement for the non-original porcelain socket that was broken and installed by a previous owner.  The two 7-watt lamps, external cord, inline switch and plug are also new and were added by me.  This sign originally came from the factory with two 15-watt lamps, but I strongly recommend using 11-watt lamps or less to keep the reverse paint on the lower ad panel from getting damaged by excessive heat.
